A vasectomy is a safe, quick and permanent method of contraception. It involves sealing the tubes (vas deferens) that carry sperm from the testicles to the penis. This procedure doesn’t affect sexual enjoyment or sex drive. You’ll still have erections and produce the same amount of fluid during ejaculation, but it will no longer contain sperm. It’s important to note that a vasectomy doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so safe sex practices are still recommended.
The Vasectomy Procedure
At Novus Health, our clinicians use the non-scalpel technique, a method considered to reduce pain and complications. You’ll receive local anaesthetic to each side of the scrotum, with some brief discomfort during the injection. The surgeon then makes a small opening in the scrotum, accesses the vas deferens and seals them with heat (cauterisation) – sutures may be used. The procedure typically takes between 15-30 minutes.
Effectiveness and Alternatives
Vasectomy is a highly effective form of contraception, with a lifetime risk of pregnancy for only 1 in 2,000 men who undergo the procedure. However, it should be approached as a permanent choice. If you’re unsure, consult with your GP to explore alternative contraceptive options. Reversing a vasectomy is possible but doesn’t guarantee restored fertility.
Before Your Procedure
You’ll have a pre-surgery counselling consultation over the telephone to discuss your medical history and confirm the vasectomy is right for you. You’ll also have a 14-day cooling-off period to make a fully informed decision.
For your appointment, plan to arrive a bit early. Wear tight-fitting underwear for post-surgery comfort and arrange for someone to drive you home, as driving isn’t recommended for 48 hours afterward.
Recovering After Your Vasectomy
Recovery typically involves resting for a couple of days, wearing tight-fitting underwear, and taking pain relief as needed. Mild bruising and swelling may occur which should subside over time. A follow-up telephone call 4-7 days after your procedure will be made to review your recovery progress.
After 16 weeks, you’ll need to provide a semen sample to confirm the vasectomy’s success. Until then, continue using other contraception methods.
