From Graduate to Ground breaker
We have had the privilege of watching Tom Ketteringham grow from the moment he joined the service straight out of university in July 2022—literally the day after his graduation—when he stepped into the role of Band 4 Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor.
Despite coming from a sporting background and finding the NHS environment initially daunting, Tom arrived with determination and a genuine desire to show what he could do. This drive quickly translated into meaningful contributions. He helped develop new content for our falls prevention class, supported senior colleagues in shaping the full-day Hip and Knee Clinic, and played a key role in building the shoulder class, which has since become a staple of our rehabilitation pathway.
Rising to Band 5: Hard Work and Potential Realised
Thanks to Tom’s dedication, strong internal performance, and the invaluable support of his team lead, Sam, he progressed to a Band 5 MSK Clinician within just nine months. It was a big step up, but Tom embraced it wholeheartedly.
With continued supervision from both Jack and Sam, he rapidly grew into a clinician that colleagues could depend on—someone trusted with complex caseloads and consistently able to deliver high-quality care.
A New Challenge: Stepping Into Band 6
By April 2025, Tom was ready for the next stage of his development. Drawn back to his roots in rehabilitation, he applied for the Band 6 MSK Rehab Clinician position. Although it meant competing against two close friends, Tom demonstrated his usual resilience, patience, and perseverance.
On 5th November, the news arrived—accompanied by fitting fireworks—that Tom had been successful. His promotion marked not just a personal achievement, but an exciting moment for our service.
Looking Ahead: Tom’s Vision for the Service
In his new Band 6 role, Tom is committed to developing and expanding rehabilitation pathways, especially through class-based and group programmes that help patients not only recover but stay well long-term.
He also hopes to pave the way for others within the team, showing that progression is possible with passion, effort, and the right support.
A Message of Thanks
Tom has expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey, especially Jack and Sam for their close mentorship, and also to Simon, Adam, Luke, Rosie, and the many colleagues who placed their trust in him.
Congratulations, Tom!
We are incredibly proud of everything Tom has achieved so far.
Congratulations on your well-deserved promotion to Band 6, Tom. We wish you the very best on your first official day in post on 1st December, and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for you.
