Whether you’re visiting a dermatologist for the first time or returning for a follow-up, it’s natural to have questions about what to expect. At Novus Health, we understand that skin conditions can impact not only your physical health but also your confidence and overall wellbeing. Our dermatology services are designed to provide expert care in a comfortable and professional setting, ensuring that you receive the most effective treatment for your specific needs.
If you’ve been referred to our dermatology team, you might be wondering what will happen during your appointment, how to prepare and what kind of treatments may be recommended. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process so that you feel informed and at ease before your visit.
Preparing for Your Dermatology Appointment
Once your GP has referred you to Novus Health for a dermatology consultation, you’ll receive details about your appointment, including the date, time and location. Preparing for your visit can help ensure that your dermatologist has all the information they need to make an accurate diagnosis and provide the best possible treatment plan.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
To make the most of your consultation, consider bringing the following:
- A list of any medications you are currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as some may affect your skin.
- Details about any previous skin conditions or treatments you’ve had, even if they are not currently active.
- Photos of your skin condition if it tends to flare up and subside, as certain conditions may not always be visible at the time of your appointment.
- A list of symptoms you have experienced, including when they started, whether they have worsened over time and any potential triggers (such as allergens, sun exposure, or stress).
Any questions or concerns you have about your skin, as your dermatologist will be happy to address them during your visit.
Wearing loose, comfortable clothing may also be helpful, especially if your dermatologist needs to examine large areas of your skin.
During Your Consultation
At the start of your appointment, your dermatologist will begin by reviewing your medical history, asking about your skin concerns, and discussing any relevant lifestyle factors, such as sun exposure, diet, and skincare routines. This initial conversation helps provide insight into potential underlying causes of your condition and allows the specialist to tailor their approach to your needs.
The Skin Examination
The next step is a thorough skin examination, which will vary depending on your specific concerns. If you have a particular issue, such as a persistent rash, acne, eczema, or a suspicious mole, the dermatologist will focus on that area. However, in some cases such as when checking for signs of skin cancer, a full-body skin check may be recommended.
During the examination, your dermatologist may use a dermatoscope, a handheld magnifying tool that allows for a closer look at moles, lesions, or other skin abnormalities. This non-invasive tool helps assess whether a mole or growth needs further investigation or removal.
If necessary, the specialist may take photographs of your skin condition for monitoring purposes, allowing them to track any changes over time.
Discussing Your Diagnosis and Treatment Options
After examining your skin, your dermatologist will explain their findings and discuss potential treatment options. Depending on your diagnosis, this may include:
- Prescription medications: These could include topical creams, oral antibiotics, or other prescription treatments to address conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis.
Lifestyle and skincare recommendations: Your specialist may suggest changes to your skincare routine, sun protection habits, or diet to help improve your skin health. - Minor procedures: If a mole, cyst, or lesion requires removal, a minor surgical procedure may be scheduled.
- Further testing: In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to examine a skin sample under a microscope for a more accurate diagnosis. If this is required, your dermatologist will explain the procedure and what to expect.
What Happens if a Minor Procedure is Needed?
If your dermatologist determines that a minor surgical procedure is necessary, such as the removal of a suspicious mole or a skin tag, they will schedule the procedure at one of our dedicated minor procedure clinics in Wakefield, Normanton, or Pontefract.
On the day of the procedure, the area will be numbed with a local anaesthetic to ensure that you don’t experience any pain. The procedure itself is usually quick and straightforward, with minimal recovery time. If tissue is removed, it will be sent to the pathology lab at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust for further analysis.
Your dermatologist will provide aftercare instructions to help your skin heal properly and will inform you if any follow-up appointments are needed.
After Your Appointment
Once your consultation is complete, your treatment plan will be put into action. If your dermatologist prescribes medication, you will receive an initial supply for at least 14 days. For longer-term treatments, we will work with your GP to ensure continuity of care.
In most cases, your skin condition will be managed outside of a hospital setting. However, if further specialist treatment is needed, we will arrange a referral to Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, where additional care can be provided.
What if Your Condition Returns?
We understand that some skin conditions can be persistent or may flare up again after treatment. That’s why we offer an SOS appointment service for patients who experience a recurrence of the same condition within 12 months. This means that instead of going through another GP referral, you can book an appointment directly with us, ensuring faster access to care.
Tips for a Smooth and Stress-Free Visit
If you’re feeling nervous about your dermatology appointment, here are a few additional tips to help put you at ease:
- Arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork and settle in before your consultation.
- Dress comfortably and wear clothing that allows easy access to areas of your skin that may need examination.
- Be open about your symptoms and concerns, your dermatologist is here to help, and the more information you provide, the better they can tailor your treatment.
