How to Clean Your NHS Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are an incredible technology for those experiencing hearing loss, enhancing their ability to interact with the world around them. They work hard all day, amplifying the world around us, so it’s no surprise that they require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance.

It’s really important to keep your hearing aids in good condition to get the most out of them and for you to have the best hearing experience possible.

One of the most important parts of hearing aid care is keeping them clean. Doing this on a regular basis can and usually does make the difference between hearing the world around you clearly and having a muted or muddy hearing experience.

Please Note: The cleaning procedures below should be performed in a clean, well-lit area to avoid any debris getting into the hearing aids during the cleaning process.

The Importance of Cleaning Your Hearing Aids

Hearing aids, just like any piece of technology, require routine maintenance to function optimally. The environment in which they operate – your ear – is a warm, moist place where earwax and debris are common. These factors can lead to the accumulation of debris on your device, affecting its performance and potentially even shortening its lifespan.

This quick guide outlines simple and effective cleaning methods for the two main types of hearing aids we provide: aids with moulds and aids with thin tubes and domes.

Cleaning Hearing aids with Moulds:

1. Remove the earmould and attached tubing from the hearing devices prior to cleaning.

2. Clean the earmould using mild soap, rinse with lukewarm water.

3. After cleaning, dry earmoulds thoroughly and remove any residual water and debris from the tubing utilising an air bulb, wire loop or by shaking the earmould vigorously to remove the water.

Earmould tubing may become stiff, brittle, or discoloured over time. Contact Novus Health regarding tube changes – We can send new ones in the post with installation instructions, and they are usually with you in a couple of days!

Cleaning hearing aids with thin tubes and domes:

1. Remove the thin tubes from your hearing devices before cleaning by unscrewing them anti-clockwise.

2. Wipe down the thin tubes and domes with a damp cloth.

3. In order to clear the thin tube of moisture and debris, push the black cleaning rod through the thin tube, beginning at the end opposite the dome.

Thin tube and dome systems should be replaced when the components become stiff, brittle or kinked – We can send new ones in the post with installation instructions, and they are usually with you in a couple of days!
