Novus Health and Wakefield Deaf Society Unite for Deaf Awareness Week 2023

Raising awareness, breaking barriers, and promoting inclusivity through collaboration and education.

Novus Health and the Wakefield & District Society for Deaf People are excited to announce their collaboration during Deaf Awareness Week, taking place from the 2nd to the 8th May.

To highlight the importance of understanding and supporting those with hearing loss, in collaboration with Wakefield’s Deaf Society,  we’ll be hosting a series of events and training sessions to educate the public and Novus Health employees.

On May 3rd, between 1 pm and 5 pm, Novus Health’s Wakefield Hub will host a special Deaf Awareness event featuring a range of informative and engaging activities. Attendees will learn about the Wakefield & District Society for Deaf People and Novus Health’s commitment to helping those with hearing loss.

The event will cover key topics such as the statistics on deafness, different levels of hearing loss, causes, and communication barriers. Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a lipreading exercise and gain hands-on experience with British Sign Language (BSL) and fingerspelling practice.

To further demonstrate our commitment to accessibility, Novus Health will also have four staff members undergo British Sign Language training during Deaf Awareness Week. This essential training will allow Novus Health to better serve and communicate with deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.

In addition to the Wakefield Hub event, Novus Health and the Wakefield Deaf Society will be present at the Ridings Shopping Centre on Friday, 5th May, from 9 am to 4 pm. This joint initiative aims to raise awareness and educate the public on the importance of understanding and supporting the deaf community.

Novus Health and the Wakefield & District Society for Deaf People are proud to work together, not only during Deaf Awareness Week but every week of the year, to break down communication barriers, promote inclusivity, and empower the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Come and see us in The Ridings Centre, Friday 5th May from 9 am to 4 pm.
