Innovating patient pathways and increasing access to services has been a central to our approach to continuous service improvement within the Dermatology Service. In response to increasing wait time for first appointment and a significant increase in demand we have introduced a consultant led single lesion spot clinic.
Although these types of clinics have been introduced for suspected skin cancer referrals, we have found they enable a high volume rapid diagnostic opportunity for routine lesions, enabling a reduced pathway time and faster access to treatment options and where necessary biopsy or excision. The consequence is also that suspicious lesions are identified more quickly and referred into secondary care for specialist cancer pathways if required.
The introduction of this approach reduced routine wait time for lesions by 2 weeks and increased capacity for new patient assessments 20% during the summer period.
